“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” See that space between the comma and the and in the declaration above? That small, finite space is where we spend our lives in the midst of eternity. True enough, we are made of dust – but unlike the dust we collect and discard – God has use for us for a short time to bring Him glory and proclaim His kingdom. We heard these words a few weeks ago as part of our Ash Wednesday Rite. In a very real sense, the imposition is an ordination rite – we are ordained into our humanity and reminded of our humility with those simple words and the sign of the cross on our foreheads. On Maundy Thursday we are once again reminded of humility and humanity in another ordination rite: in the washing of the apostle’s feet Jesus displayed His connection with our flesh and blood. And in-between the events of that fateful and holy weekend, the full divinity of Jesus comes to change you and me and all those who have accepted the Christ forever. I pray that you are indeed changed during your Lenten journey. Shake off the dust of the old man as you walk towards the empty tomb on Easter Sunday and be prepared to declare with your brothers and sisters throughout the world that “He is risen!” My love to you in Christ, Fr.
